Entry # 9

Today, we were taught about the Moral Compass, more known as the Ethical Framework. The ethical framework is there to guide us in making ethical decisions. It is made up of the following: virtue being placed at the center, and it is surrounded by utilitarianism, care, justice, and rights. More often than not, we were taught to decide after knowing the facts. However, knowing the facts is not enough as it only shows what had happened, not what should have or could have happened. And that’s where our own insights come in.

It is said that there is no such thing as being unbiased. In deciding or picking, we will always have a bias. Same with ethical decision making, we will tend to choose what we think should be chosen even if others think otherwise. And there is nothing wrong with that, as we were all raised differently and we have different experiences that contribute to the way we see things now.

What the moral compass does now is that it tries to challenge you to think of what others might feel about the situation. This is where the regards for others come in now. This is when decision-making becomes hard because you know that your decisions will greatly affect those who are around you.

And honestly speaking, people will always be affected by the decisions we make. That’s just how life works. We are all inter-connected in one way or another. And I guess that’s where CSRGOVE comes in. One day, when we have started working, we will face crossroads that will choose us to decide for the sake of the enterprise and we cannot help but affect others may it be in a positive or negative way. What matters is that we are firm with our decisions knowing it will benefit the greater good and not just our own selves. Because that’s what good governance is all about. You always try to do what is best for everyone even if it is a disadvantage to us sometimes. When you know you’ve done something good to others, you know you’ve done something good for yourself, too. And that’s what I’m trying to instill to my own values now.

Deciding will always be hard – it will leave you to doubt yourself sometimes – but it shouldn’t be hard to choose what is good.
